I just got back from an awesome trip to Texas. I got to enjoy the local healthy cuisine, check out the baseball stadiums and saw a lot of cows. So what’s the big deal about the whole trip? I’m afraid of flying, but I did it anyways. One of the biggest successes of the trip? Overcoming my fears.
Stepping out of my Fears
I’ll be honest I’ve never imagined the day I would get on an airplane. It’s all of my fears rolled into one: confined spaces I can’t escape from, embarrassing myself in front of total strangers and well… heights. Yet none of that has happened in the times I’ve been on an airplane.
It got me thinking about the fears I faced when trying to lose weight. Getting started on a gym program can be daunting itself, but worrying about judgement from others can stop you from beginning in the first place. It’s overcoming fears that we make up in our mind that help us to succeed.
Here’s some of the things I’ve learned on how to deal with fears not only when it comes to losing weight, but to life in general:
- People are entitled to their opinions, doesn’t mean you have to acknowledge them – whether it’s having a panic attack on an airplane, or starting an exercise routine in the gym for the first time, people will always have an opinion. Especially in the gym, people will try to tell you what your doing wrong or that you should give up because it’s too hard. Find a trusted confidant in any situation that makes you uncomfortable, this is your go-to person when you need motivation or advice.
- Look at the situation realistically, or broken down into smaller achievable goals – It’s best to take baby steps when trying to train your brain to let go of fears. Fears are learned behaviors or thoughts we’ve picked up over our lifetime that we believe are essential for our survival. It takes 21 days to develop a new behavior, so break conquering your fear down into smaller goals. Maybe you begin by just walking into the gym. Next step is to walk into the gym and walk on a treadmill for 5 minutes. Make sure to hold yourself accountable to meet your goals, and listen for your fears trying to talk you out of it and do it anyways.
- Allow yourself to feel uncomfortable – One of the biggest things that prevent people from conquering their fears is the fear of being uncomfortable. For weight loss, it can be fear of judgement, fear of losing your identity or being afraid of to living up to others expectations. Feeling uncomfortable is when real change begins to happen, because you’ve allowed yourself to feel something you’ve never felt. It’s okay to be uncomfortable and put yourself out there.
