My mindful morning routine is my non negotiables that help set me up for a stress free morning. These are the things that help keep me focused and as a result, stress less throughout the day.

My Morning Routine
Every day is a fresh, new start, and the way we start the day sets the tone for how the rest of the day will go. Think about the days where you misplace your car keys, or can’t find your left shoe. A day that starts in a frazzle usually leads to heightened stress later on in the day. Trust me, this happens more often than not to me.
Let me preface this by saying not everyday looks like this. I am human after all, and sometimes life just happens. But most mornings I try to keep it pretty routine so I start the day off on a good foot.
5:30am Wake up with lemon water and apple cider vinegar
Most mornings I try to start the day off with some warm water with lemon and apple cider vinegar. This combo gets you going (in more ways than one), and wakes up your digestive system. I notice it takes an hour or so to kick in, so that’s why I drink it first thing. Make sure to drink it warm versus cold – it’s easier on your body that early in the morning.
6:00am Skincare and makeup routine
Making sure that you wash your face first thing in the morning is just as important as washing your makeup off at night. My esthetician always told me that may face can collect dirt and grime throughout the night. Not to mention any type of cream or treatment I put on at night. My skincare routine in the morning has become an important part of my overall wellness, and it’s really helped manage my acne.
I start out by washing my face with Primally Pure’s baby goat milk bar. Not only is it great for removing all the junk off your skin, but it’s also nourishing. I love having a clean slate for applying my makeup. I also love using Farmacy’s Green Defense Sunscreen before applying my makeup. This helps to protect my skin from harmful damage, and it’s one of the only clean sunscreens out there I trust. It also does not clog my pores, which is a win in my book.
6:30am Meditation Practice
I’ll be honest, I am not as disciplined with this one as I’d like to be, but I’m working on it. I know that this is something that my body craves and needs. Going back to the beginning when I talked about starting out the morning in a stressed state, it sets the tone for the rest of the day.
If anything, meditation teaches me to be grounded in the present moment. That no matter what the situation, I can always go back to my breath. Somedays are harder than others just sit for even 10 minutes, but man do I notice a difference. Even if I feel like I can not do 10 minutes. I’ll do 5. My favorite way to meditate is with the Calm meditation app. They have an entire library of meditations geared towards different needs. I usually do the 10 minute guided body scan because it is more guided, and gives me less chances to drift off to Wonderland in my brain. But if you are someone who prefers less guidance, they have those too.
6:40am Start Breakfast
While I am finishing up my makeup routine, I’ll start breakfast. If I am going to make something that requires some time to cook, I will start cooking it while I am putting on my makeup. For example, if I am making my spaghetti squash oatmeal, I’ll place the spaghetti squash in the oven before I start putting on my makeup. This way it can cook while I am getting ready, and will be ready when I start making breakfast. If I am cooking something on the stovetop, I’ll cook it on low until I am able to be in the kitchen to watch it. Breakfast is one of my non negotiables in my morning routine.
7:00am Morning Matcha
Another non negotiable part of my routine in the morning? My morning matcha. I know this may sound like the most basic thing you’ve ever heard, but hear me out.
Making my morning matcha is a daily ritual. It’s something that I really enjoy putting all of my energy in to. It requires the right amount of water to matcha ratio, the right amount of milk, and is another way for me to sneak in some additional vitamins. Besides the facts that matcha is loaded with lot’s of good antioxidants and nutrients, it makes me feel good. Anything that leaves me feeling good is worth keeping in my morning routine if you ask me. My favorite brand of matcha is Vital Proteins Collagen Matcha. You can check out my iced matcha latte recipe here.
7:30am Drive to Work
This is where everything comes full circle. My make it our break it moment. The morning commute.
I do everything to make sure I have a calm morning routine, to set myself up for that morning commute. If my meditation practice has taught me anything, is that acceptance is key. Accepting the traffic, accepting that other people drive like NASCAR drivers to work. Accepting that there are some things about the morning commute I can’t change, but I can choose to accept with grace.
I love to listen to podcasts on my way in to the office. Some of my favorites include the Driven podcast, Bulletproof Radio with Dave Asprey, Revolution Health Radio with Chris Kresser and the Food Blogger Pro Podcast. So there you have it, my Monday through Friday morning routine. On the weekends I wake up a little later, and nix the makeup – but everything else sill stands. Keeping the routine is what keeps me motivated throughout the day, and gives me the jumpstart I need.
